Teaching and Training

Psalm 8:2 (New International Version)

From the lips of children and infants
you have ordained praise
because of your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.

As I've mentioned before, we are teaching Caleb the children's catechism right now. One of my favorite questions is "Is there more than one true God?" To which Caleb heartily responds, "No, there is only one truth God. I know it's not exactly grammatical, but I love his answer. Because God is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. And I want my children to know that all of their days.

We also sing the Doxology with our children before bed each night. We sing this at every worship service at our church, so it is important to us that our children memorize it. Caleb used to "sing" with us, but he has been going through a stubborn phase and not singing. Meanwhile, Alexa has started spitting out her pacifier as soon as if not before we start singing. She loves to "sing" along, although she does not know any of the words and just sings, "Aaaa." So, the last few night, we have started requiring Caleb to sing with us. It feels mean to force him to sing, but in reality, he LOVES to sing. He starts singing as soon as we put a CD on in the car. Tonight, though, he sang happily, even managing to sing a few recognizable words, with a hearty "Amen" at the end. It was wonderful to hear his childlike praise of his Lord.

Our prayer for our children is that they will know the Lord all the days of their lives. That the beginnnings of faith and obedience that we see in their young hearts will grow into a mature faith. That they will never know a day when they did not love and serve the Lord Jesus Christ. May this be so in their lives to the praise of our heavenly Father. And may he give us strength and wisdom as we teach and train.
